American Girl is a brand of 18-inch dolls patterned after young girls of different ethnicities. They also have a “Truly Me” line that allows buyers to specify the dolls’ looks.

Pleasant Company, which handles the brand of dolls, was established in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland. Twelve years after being in business, it was purchased by Mattel Incorporated.

American Girl has more than 20 retail locations in the US and has over 2000 employees nationwide. The Pleasant Company is an eight-time recipient of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award.

Those in management and (some) full-time positions are given 401(k) matches and auto contributions. Unfortunately, the company isn’t known to provide benefits to part-time employees.

However, employees do enjoy the training provided. They also take part in holiday events. There are occasional giveaways (mainly consisting of toys) and free lunches.

How old do you have to be to work at American Girl?

Interested applicants need to be at least 18 years of age, especially those aiming to land full-time jobs. Federal law places limitations on the schedules and responsibilities that may be given to minors.

Things to Know About American Girl

The brand’s culture is described as fast-paced, fun, and innovative. Employees are expected to work well as a part of a team, but are also given the chance to grow individually.

Although it already has retail stores and distribution partners, the company has landed a deal with Toys R Us. Instead of just having shelves though, the brand will be featured in mini-hubs inside the retail giant’s locations.

The brand is known for publishing the largest consumer toy catalog in the country. American Girl also has its own magazine that gets more than 300 thousand readers per issue.

As for social efforts, in 2014, Mattel has donated dolls (one for every purchase) to hospitals under the Children’s Hospital Association. The company did, however, limit their donations to a thousand pieces daily.
