Duane Reade Interview Questions

The following examples of interview questions are standard in the retail industry and are meant to help you prepare.

How do you manage your time?  Be specific when answering this question by giving walking the hiring manager through a time when you had multiple projects that you had to complete.

Where do you see yourself in five years?  The interviewer does NOT want to know what your big dreams are.  Keep your answer relative to the company such as your educational goals if they are business related or what type of career advancement that you are looking to achieve.

Why should you be hired?  This can be a difficult question because you want to ensure that your answer sticks out above the rest of the candidates.  You need to tell the hiring manager what you are bringing to the company and how you are going to help the company achieve its’ goals.

How can you relate the goals you have for yourself to the goals of this company?  This is a sneaky question as it helps the interviewer discover what you have researched about the company.  The only way to answer this question eloquently is if you know what the goals of the company are.

Why do you want to work here?  Don’t answer this question with a generic answer nor an answer that is about what the company can do for you.  This answer should reiterate what you can do for the company, as well as what the company can do for you making it feel more like a team effort where all parties are satisfied.

Advice for Application Process

Before you start to search for a job, create or update your resume ensuring that addresses and phone numbers of previous employers are listed.  This will make filling out the application easier as you will have a reference to look at.  Also, research Duane Reade and find out what the goals and values are.  This information will help you decide if the company is a right fit for you.

On the day of the interview, dress appropriately.  Dressing in business casual attire for this company is preferred.  Men should be clean shaven and women should wear natural looking makeup with minimal jewelry.  Come prepared with a notepad, pen, your resume, and a small list of company based questions to ask the interviewer.  Turn off your phone, spit out your gum, and avoid nicotine or caffeine before the interview to ensure that your breath is fresh.

Be relaxed and confident at the interview.  Shake hands when greeting the hiring manager, have a good posture, keep eye contact, and smile.  Answer the interview questions with examples from your previous experience and always keep things positive.  At the end of the interview, thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration.

It has been recommended to mail or email a thank you note the same day or the day after the interview.  This may seem quaint, but it is an excellent way to keep your interview at the forefront of the hiring manager’s mind.  Follow up with the interviewer in five days if you haven’t heard a response.
