Milton C. Shedd, Ken Norris, David Demott, and George Millay opened SeaWorld in 1964.  With only a few dolphins, sea lions, 6 attractions and 22 acres, the park proved to be a success and more than 400,000 guests visited in the first 12 months.  Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. (HBJ) purchased the company in 1976.

During his time, he had opened three more SeaWorld parks located in Aurora, OH, Orlando, FL, and San Antonio, TX; along with Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven and Boardwalk and Baseball in Haines City.  Anheuser-Busch bought all six parks in 1989.

In 2009, Busch Entertainment was sold to the Blackstone Group and subsequently renamed SeaWorld Entertainment.  The company owns and operates 11 U.S. theme parks, including SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, and Sesame Place. They had more than 22 million visitors in 2014.  The company Headquarters is located in Orlando, FL

How old do you have to be to work at SeaWorld?

Candidates must be at least 15 year old to be considered for a position at most parks. However, some positions may require applicants to be a minimum of 18 year old.

SeaWorld Job Description

Guest Relations Host/Hostess – The Guest Relations Host/Hostess gives outstanding customer service by processing group reservations, quick queue tickets, and global reservations.  Other duties include following the cash handling policies and procedures and handling Will Call and Interaction Program Requests.

Park Operations Host/Hostess – The responsibilities of this position includes providing extraordinary customer service by greeting guests, answering questions and resolving guest issues.  Other responsibilities include ensuring safe and efficient line speed and crowd flow, operating and monitoring ride systems, and assisting with park emergencies.

Horticulture Supervisor – The duties of this role include performing diverse horticultural, grounds keep, and greenhouse tasks, providing supervision and training of team members, and actively assisting the department management team in the planning of operations.  The Horticulture Supervisor is also responsible for creating and maintaining various reports, performing construction and installation tasks, and performing tasks related to cold-weather production.

Tram Driver/Operator – The responsibilities of the Tram Driver/Operator include operating trams to transport guests and team members from remote parking sites, provide crowd control, direct cars in parking lot and maintain the cleanliness of the area.

SeaWorld Interview Questions

The following questions were asked of candidates for this company and are meant to assist you in your interview.

Do you have any plans to continue your education?  The recruiter wants to discover if your plans will be compatible with the company goals.  He or she also wants to know what kind of ambition you have.  Keep specific on what goals you have set for yourself and how you plan to achieve them.

Can you describe a goal that you set and did not reach?  This question you will want to discuss what the goal was, why you didn’t reach it, how you would change the outcome and what you learned from the experience.

How do you handle stressful situations?  Make sure to answer this question within the setting of your past job experience by giving specific examples.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?  The hiring manager is looking for what interests you outside of work and how you wind down.  This is an excellent opportunity to discuss hobbies, sports, or any volunteering that you do.

What is the difference between neatness and orderliness?  There is a difference and the recruiter wants to figure out if you know what that difference is.  Neatness indicates cleanliness and orderliness indicates organization.  These do not mutually go hand in hand.  One can be clean but not organized or organized and not have a clean work space.

Advice for Application Process

The application process starts with how thorough you are on the application.  Ensure that you have read all the directions and double check that all of your contact information is correct.  Since this is an online only application, you will want to update your resume and make sure that your resume matches your application.

You will want to dress in business attire for the interview.  This means that you should not wear flip flops, shorts or tank tops.  You will need to collect the questions that you will want to ask beforehand.  Turn off your cell phone, spit out your gum, and if you smoke, don’t do so before the interview.  Calm your nerves before entering the building; straighten your posture and put a smile on your face.

During the interview, display positive body language by shaking hands in greeting and keeping eye contact.  Answer the questions clearly and concisely, without mumbling or using profanity.  Use your past experience to answer the questions with detail whenever possible.

You may be offered the position at the conclusion of the interview.  If this happens, the recruiter will walk you through the next pre-employment steps you will need to complete.  Be prepared to have a drug test and your background checked.  If a position isn’t offered right away, ask the hiring manager what the turn-around time is.  Don’t forget to thank the recruiter for his or her time and consideration.
